Privacy Policy

Togethr (“we”) helps people talk across languages with translated video calls and chat. This policy explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it, and how to get rid of it.

We never store the audio of your calls. While you are on a call your speech is streamed to OpenAI, which turns it into text so the other person can read it in their language. Togethr never writes that audio down: it is not saved to our databases or our file storage at any point, so there is no recording of a Togethr call for us to hand over, leak, or replay. The text of what was said is a different matter: each finished sentence is saved into the conversation as a message, so the transcript of a call stays in the chat afterwards, exactly like the messages you type.

Calls are not the only place the app listens. The chat box has a microphone button you can hold to dictate a message instead of typing it. That audio takes a different route from call audio, and it is described in full under Dictation below.

Information we collect

We do not collect your location, your contacts, your browsing history, or any analytics or advertising data. There is no advertising or analytics SDK in the app.

How we use it

We use this information only to provide the app: signing you in, delivering and translating your messages and calls, showing your contacts whether you are online, notifying you when someone calls or writes, measuring call time against the plan that is paying for it, and acting on reports of abuse. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or track you across other apps or websites.

Dictation

You can hold the microphone button in the chat box and speak instead of typing. Nothing is recorded unless you are holding it. Here is exactly where that audio goes.

While you hold the button, your microphone is streamed to Apple’s speech recognition so the text appears as you talk. The app deliberately does not force Apple’s on-device recogniser: Apple’s compact offline model is much weaker outside English, and a mis-heard word here does not stay a visible typo — it gets translated into confident nonsense for the other person. So that audio leaves your device and is processed on Apple’s servers. For dictation, Apple is a speech processor, not only our sign-in and billing provider.

The app records the same clip to a temporary file on your device at the same time. When you let go, that clip is sent to our server, which passes it to OpenAI for one more accurate transcription that replaces Apple’s rough version in the message box. Our server holds the clip only for the moment it takes to forward it — it is never written to our databases or our file storage — and the app deletes the temporary file as soon as the transcription comes back or fails.

If either step fails, you keep whatever text you already have; nothing is retried and nothing is kept. The text itself only becomes a message if you press send, and is then treated like any other message you typed.

Service providers

We use trusted third parties to operate the app, who process data only to perform these functions on our behalf:

How long we keep it

WhatHow long
Messages and their translations, including call transcriptsFor as long as your account exists
Photos and videos sent in a conversationFor as long as the conversation exists; deleted when the account is deleted
Call and billing recordsUp to 7 years, as Dutch and EU financial record-keeping rules require
Server logs30 days
PresenceOverwritten each time you go online or offline; removed with your account
Call audioNever stored
Dictation audioNever stored by us; the copy on your device is deleted as soon as it has been transcribed

These are the longest we keep each thing. Deleting your account removes most of it sooner, as described next.

Be aware that there is nothing in the app that deletes a single message or a single photo. Neither person in a conversation can remove something the other sent, which also means a photo an abuse report was filed about cannot be made to disappear. Deleting your account is what removes your conversations and everything in them.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from inside the app, on the Profile screen, under Delete account — no email to us and no waiting. Because it cannot be undone, you are asked to confirm who you are first: your password, or the Apple or Google sheet you originally signed in with. Once you confirm, the account is gone and the teardown of everything attached to it runs on our servers immediately afterwards.

That teardown permanently removes your profile and every username you have ever held, your conversations and the messages, call transcripts, photos and videos in them, your call and metering records, your minute allowance and subscription entitlement, your presence, and your device push tokens.

Two things deliberately outlive a deleted account:

If you would rather not do it in the app, you can ask us to delete your account at the address below and we will do it for you. You can also ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, or to correct it.

Children

Togethr is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country).
